Mental Health First Aid
Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) is a nationally recognised course, managed by Health Scotland,
& endorsed by the Scottish Ambulance Service, which will teach you to;
- give initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem
- deal with a crisis situation, or the first signs of someone developing mental ill health,
- guide people towards appropriate professional help.
Formal evaluation has shown that people who attended this course improved their confidence & ability to help others, improved their knowledge & reduced negative attitudes they may have had about mental health problems. It also improved their own mental health. Participants on Wren and Greyhound courses often say it has ‘demystified’ the subject for them:
- 96% of our participants rate the usefulness to their job as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.
- 96% would ‘definitely’ recommend it to others.
The course is delivered over 12 hours, either two full days or four half days. It includes
- Scottish mental health policy and legislation
- Prevalence and risk factors for mental health problems
- Recognising and responding to –
- Depression
- Suicidal behaviour
- Anxiety Disorders
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar Disorder
